The Leo Baeck Institute started working since 2022 with the German-Israeli Schoolbook Commission which is led in Germany by Professor Eckhardt Fuchs and coordinated by Dr. Dirk Sadowski at the Leibniz Institute for Educational Media – Georg Eckert Institute in Braunschweig and the Israeli Ministry of Education.
The official joint German-Israeli cooperation on textbooks started in the late 1970s. Experts analyzed the depicting of each other’s country and gave recommendations. After a Proposal by the Israeli Ambassador in Germany, Ilan Mor, the DISBK was officially constituted in 2010, coordinated by the GEI and the MOFET-Institute.
The DISBK published recommendations for textbooks in 2015 and 2017 and it prepared teaching materials after studies in which German and Israeli textbooks were examined, revealed shortfalls in the way textbooks portrayed each other´s country. Furthermore, it prepared digital and interactive teaching modules in German and Hebrew on the topic “Migration” between 2019 and 2021.
Currently the commission is aiming to combine historical and digital learning. Based on the selected archival collections of the Leo Baeck Institute Jerusalem we are jointly preparing digital collections to be used for history lessons both in Germany and Israel.
