Call for Applications: “The German Studies in Israel Conference: History, Language, Culture, and Society” – October 25, 2026

The annual Israel German Studies Conference aims to foster intellectual exchange, collaboration, and scholarly community among researchers of German Studies in Israel. Showcasing novel approaches, new findings, and emerging perspectives, the conference highlights contemporary Israeli scholarship in the field while providing a platform for dialogue with the broader international community of German Studies scholars.

We invite scholars at all career stages to submit proposals for individual papers or organized panels. We welcome contributions from all disciplines related to German Studies, including literature and culture, history, the social sciences, the arts, law, media studies, Jewish studies, and related fields.

We particularly encourage comparative and interdisciplinary contributions that situate German-related topics and questions within broader contexts—transnational, environmental, theoretical, or otherwise. We also welcome proposals that engage with pressing contemporary concerns, such as wartime experiences, the crisis of liberal democracy, or artistic production in the face of mass violence.

Proposals must include the following:

Panel: Title of the panel and of the presentations it features; the names of three prospective presenters; and the name of a chair who will moderate and respond to the panel. Please attach an abstract describing the panel’s topic (400 words), as well as abstracts for the individual talks (200-300 words), along with the CV of each participant.

Talk: Name of prospective presenter; title of the presentation; and an abstract of 200-300 words; the presenter’s CV.

* Please note that panels will be restricted to 90 minutes; presentations will not exceed 20 minutes.

Panel proposals will be given priority over individual paper proposals. Each talk is limited to 20 minutes, with responses up to 10 minutes, and panels are limited to up to an hour and a half. All talks must be delivered in Hebrew or English. The conference committee will not be able to cover travel or accommodation expenses. The deadline for submissions is July 15, 2026.
Please send your submissions and your CV to GermanStudiesIsrael@leobaeck.org.

Sincerely, The Organizing Committee
