Join us for an evening in honor of Amit Levi’s new book:
“A New East: From German Orientalism to Israeli Orientalism“
Amit Levy’s new book examines how Zionist and Israeli Oriental Studies, rooted in 19th/early 20th-century German academia, took shape at the Hebrew University. It shows how German-Jewish scholars migrated their scholarly methods, transitioning from pure text-based study to direct interaction with local Arab populations.
The book reveals how academic work intertwined with the tense political, social, and cultural realities in Mandate Palestine and early Israel. By doing so, it highlights the influence of scholarly research on the roots and progression of the Arab-Jewish conflict.
