A Look at Law in German Jewish History and Culture

Can Constitutions, Laws and Agreements Prevent Revolutions?

The core of the discussion will be the tension between the constitution and the rule of law versus the changing reality, sometimes rapidly, to the point of a feeling of loss of control. German Jews, who integrated into German bourgeois society during the era of emancipation, internalized during this period the values of the rule of law that were part of the core of the bourgeois world of values, as well as trust in the German constitution. The developments that occurred in Germany in the late Weimar Republic period and after the rise of the Nazi regime greatly undermined this trust. We will discuss these processes and the various reactions of German Jews to them.
