Speaking Truth to Power: Oral Testimonies and Crimes against Humanity in the Argentinean Province of Jujuy
Chair: Dr. Margalit Bejarano
Speakers: Dr. Martina L. Weisz, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem
Since July 2012, a series of trials for crimes against humanity took place in the Argentinean province of Jujuy, which has been referred to as the “capital of impunity.” The constitution of the court was an integral part of a long process that began in 1985, when the authorities of the three military juntas that ruled the country during the dictatorship that took hold of the country between 1976-1983 were put to trial and condemned for their crimes.
Through their testimonies, many of the victims and their relatives spoke out about the brutal forms of repression they had suffered during this period characterized as State Terrorism, unveiling a long story of oppression that can be traced back to the colonization and conquest of the American continent more than five centuries ago.
